Misha Oraa Ali
My name is Misha - I am an artist and scientist who makes paintings, sculpture, and functional ceramics.
My work is inspired by the intersection of science and art – which are often, strangely, seen in opposition to each other. Artists must rigorously test different methods, compositions and materials to create their work, while scientists must be creative to achieve progress and make significant discoveries. I create art across a variety of media– from watercolour and gouache, digital animation, wood- and metal-working, creative coding, and ceramics. Currently, I am working on a series of mixed media sculptures with the goal of creating artificial reef structures from sustainable materials to rehabilitate marine habitats suffering from coral bleaching events.
I live on Wabanaki land (so-called Maine) with Billie Jean (my best cat friend), with whom I share a love for being cozy, and Ike (my best human friend and partner), with whom I share a love for the sea. Previously, I trained as a cognitive scientist and have research experience in psycholinguistics and behavioral neuroscience. You can find my portfolio, CV and resume here.
